President Donald Trump failed to address gun control Thursday in his response to a mass shooting at a Florida high school that left 17 people dead and at least 15 wounded.
Trump, who described Wednesday’s shooting at a Parkland high school as a “scene of terrible violence, hatred and evil,” said he wants to make the nation’s schools safer but offered no definite remedies or policy proposals, such as increased gun control.
“To every parent, teacher and child who is hurting so badly, we are here for you whatever you need, whatever we can do to ease your pain,” Trump said at a White House press conference. “Your suffering is our burden also. No child, no teacher should ever be in danger in an American school. No parent should ever have to fear for their sons and daughters when they kiss them goodbye in the morning.”
Trump plans to visit Parkland and meet with victims’ families and local officials “to continue coordinating the federal response.”
Accused gunman Nikolas Cruz, 19, who was apprehended shortly after the massacre, faces 17 counts of premeditated murder.
