First lady Melania Trump plans to take an upcoming trip to Africa, she announced Wednesday during a reception she hosted for the spouses of foreign leaders and others participating in the annual U.N. General Assembly.
The trip, slated for the first week in October, will be Trump’s first major international solo tour. The itinerary include visits to Ghana, Malawi, Kenya and Egypt.
The trip would be the farthest she would have traveled on her own since becoming the first lady in January 2017, according to reports.
“Since becoming first lady, I have had the privilege of speaking with many of the spouses of world leaders,” Trump said. “Our discussions are always united by the universal desire to provide children with the support and tools necessary to grow up happy, healthy and responsible adults. I am thrilled to be working with the United States Agency for International Development on what I know will be a meaningful trip.”
Since the launch in May of her “Be Best” campaign, Trump has met with children all over the world, promoting successful organizations and programs that share her goal of supporting and helping kids.
Trump’s office will be working closely with USAID to plan the tour, where she will focus on maternal and newborn care in hospitals, education for children, the deep culture and history woven into each African country, and how the United States is supporting each nation on its journey to self-reliance.
