A host of the world’s top Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) players competed at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Rock Creek Park from July 25-Aug. 3.
In 2023, the Citi Open combined with the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic to create the Mubadala DC Open, the fifth-largest professional tennis event in the United States and the only combined ATP-WTA 500-level tennis tournament in the world. Co-founded by Arthur Ashe, Donald Dell, and John A. Harris in 1969, the tournament is the fourth-longest-running pro tennis event in the U.S. and the longest-running tournament in a public park.
This year, players Alexandra Eala and Taylor Fritz were victorious in the weeklong competition, which was extended a day this year due to a rain delay on the date of the originally scheduled championship.
In addition to the action on the court, the Open also honored former D.C. first lady Cora Masters Barry, founder and executive director of the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center, founded in 2001. The award named Barry as one of the “Heroes of the Game,” and celebrated her decades of creating opportunities for District youth on and off the court.
