The music and entertainment world reacted in shock and sorrow after the tragic death of Angie Stone, the pioneering singer-songwriter and hip-hop trailblazer who was killed in a car accident early Saturday morning in Montgomery, Alabama. She was 63.

Stoneโ€™s publicist, Deborah R. Champagne, confirmed the devastating news, stating that her family is heartbroken. โ€œA number of her loved ones had just spoken to her last night,โ€ Champagne told TMZ.

Born Angela Brown, Stone first rose to prominence as a member of The Sequence, hip-hopโ€™s first all-female rap group. Their 1979 hit Funk You Up became one of the earliest rap records to break into the mainstream, later sampled in Bruno Marsโ€™ โ€œUptown Funkโ€ and Dr. Dreโ€™s โ€œKeep Their Heads Ringinโ€™.โ€ After her years with The Sequence, Stone launched a solo career in the late 1990s, earning Grammy nominations and releasing celebrated R&B hits like โ€œBrotha,โ€ โ€œNo More Rainโ€ and โ€œWish I Didnโ€™t Miss You.โ€

Stoneโ€™s career spanned decades, seamlessly blending hip-hop, soul, and R&B. Her debut solo album, โ€œBlack Diamond,โ€ achieved gold status. She earned multiple Grammy nominations, including Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for U-Haul and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Joe for โ€œMore Than a Womanโ€ and with Betty Wright for โ€œBaby.โ€

Several of Stoneโ€™s peers offered tributes following the devastating news.

Chuck D, the legendary Public Enemy frontman and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, called Stone a foundational figure.

โ€œAngie Stone [was] a powerful pioneer whenever I thought of her,โ€ he told the Black Press. โ€œA foundation of modern soul and hip-hop and women empowerment that sheโ€™s still uncredited for. A terrible loss.โ€

Rocky Bucano, executive director of the Hip Hop Museum, described Stone as a groundbreaking force.

โ€œAs a member of The Sequence, Angie B helped pave the way for generations of women in hip-hop,โ€ Bucano said in an email to the Black Press. โ€œHer impact on hip-hop culture is immeasurable, and her presence will be deeply missed. Rest in power, Angie Stone. Your voice and influence will never fade.โ€

DJ Ralph McDaniels also told the Black Press that Stoneโ€™s artistry mainly was unmatched.

โ€œPeaceful journey to our sister Angie Stone,โ€ he said. โ€œHer voice was unique and direct from hip-hopโ€™s female group Sequence to her solo soul songs.โ€

Dr. Mario Dickens of Mario Dickens Ministries also offered condolences.

โ€œWe are saddened to hear of the passing of one of this eraโ€™s greatest memorable voices,โ€ he said. โ€œWe pray for her loved ones and fans,โ€ said Dickens, who extended his companyโ€™s memorial printing services to Stoneโ€™s family at no cost.

Stone was scheduled to perform later that day at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) tournament in Baltimore.

CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams-Parker issued the following statement:

“We are heartbroken by the tragic and sudden passing of Angie Stone, an award-winning singer, a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., a community activist, role model, and mother whose soulful artistry and spirit made an indelible mark on her community, our nation, and the world. She used her incredible talent, passion, and presence to inspire and touch us with strength and hope. On behalf of the CIAAย  family, we extend our deepest condolences and stand in support of all those mourning this tremendous loss.”
