โ€œDistrict of Second Chancesโ€ is more than a documentary, but a moving portrayal of the lives of three men who transformed their destinies after enduring lengthy prison sentences. Directed by Wynette Yao, the film captivates audiences with its profound message of hope and resilience.

While the documentary was recently featured in the Pan African Film & Arts Festival in Los Angeles, there was a special screening during the DC Independent Film Festival (DCIFF), bringing the narrative full circle to the city where the three menโ€™s stories unfolded.

The documentary tracked the lives of Gene Downing, Colie “Shaka” Long, and Anthony โ€œPeteโ€ Petty, each of whom found themselves caught in the web of the criminal justice system at a young age. Their stories are a testament to the capacity for redemption and the power of determination in the face of adversity.

Downing’s story centered around family and perseverance. His journey to fatherhood was interrupted by his arrest, just one month before his daughter’s birth. Determined to be a role model, Gene turned to education as his escape from the confines of prison.

He shared heartwarming memories of reuniting with his daughter, including indoor skydiving and go-kart racing, experiences that symbolized the joy of rebuilding a life once thought lost.

“It was exciting โ€ฆ not only obviously being in the film and having your story told and for the reasons why our stories were being told, but to have it seen and shown in the very city in which you’ve encountered all of the things that’ve been depicted in the film, I think was huge,โ€ Downing said.

Colie “Shaka” Long’s path to transformation began with a spiritual awakening during his time in solitary confinement. He embraced education as his tool for change, writing a book while incarcerated. He is currently pursuing a degree in liberal arts at Georgetown University.

Longโ€™s message to youth was powerful: “Your value does not diminish based on someone else’s inability to see your worth.”

He shared how being incarcerated helped him unlearn negative practices.

“A lot of us were prisoners before we actually entered the prison in the first place. We used that time to unlearn a lot of things that we were taught in society that caused us to make the choices that we made to enter prison,โ€

Petty’s story emphasized the importance of community and mentorship. He spoke about the power of staying connected with friends and family and the impact of positive role models. His belief that everyone could change their future provided a source of hope for those who felt trapped by their past.ย

“One of the most beautiful parts was for people who knew me already since I was a kid โ€” they’ve seen some of the destructive things I used to do โ€”ย  for them to see me in a different light now,โ€ Petty explained.

The documentary’s director was drawn to these stories to shed light on the human side of the criminal justice system. Yao shared that her aim was to continue telling stories that highlight the struggles and triumphs of the underdog, especially within the realm of criminal justice reform.

“District of Second Chances” was not just a film; it was a movement. The film challenged viewers to reconsider their views on incarceration and to acknowledge the potential for change. As Downing, Long, and Petty shared their journeys, they, in turn, inspired others to believe in the possibility of their own second chances.
