Things did not go as planned for costume designer Ruth E. Carter when she envisioned her career.

"Family in Church Clothes, New York," taken by Russell Lee, is currently on display at the David Driskell Center at the University of Maryland as part of the exhibition "Posing Beauty in African American Culture."
