Dr. Benjamin Chavis was celebrated as the father of the environmental justice movement at the Mississippi Statewide Environmental Climate Justice Summit, where he was praised for his 1987 study, “Toxic Waste and Race in the United States of America”, and his 1982 protest against the dumping of toxic polychlorinated biphenyls in Warren County, North Carolina, which launched the modern-day environmental justice movement.
