Mary McLeod Bethune: A ‘Potent, Ebullient, Unreal’ Champion of Education and Equity

Mary McLeod Bethune was a pioneering educator, civil rights activist, and businesswoman who founded the Daytona Beach Literary and Industrial School for Training Negro Girls, which later merged with Cookman Institute to form Bethune-Cookman College, and advocated for racial integration, women’s suffrage rights, and anti-lynching and discrimination throughout her 80-year life.
