D.C. will use ranked choice voting in eligible contests with three or more candidates beginning in June 2026, allowing voters to rank up to five candidates in order of preference, and if no candidate receives a majority of votes, the candidate with the fewest votes will be eliminated and their votes transferred to the next highest-ranked candidate.
