When former D.C. first lady Cora Masters Barry announced her decision to endorse Marcus Goodwin, 28, a native Washingtonian, Ward 4 homeowner and real estate professional, for the at-large D.C. Council seat currently held by Anita Bonds, she says she could not foresee the backlash she’d receive.
Nonetheless, Barry says she’s convinced that Goodwin will make a great council member because “he knows the city, he’s particularly dedicated to the south side of the District and especially because it’s time to have some excellence on the council.”
“Some people have incorrectly assumed that [Bonds] had a long-term relationship with my late husband [Marion Barry] but that was never the case,” Barry said.
Bonds, now in her 70s, was once an aide to then-Mayor Barry.
“I’ve been surprised by the level of tension my decision has caused, but before I made up my mind, I sat down and talked with Marcus candidly,” Barry said. “I got to know him and was able to ascertain what he wants to do for the District and for our residents. He’s earned my unwavering support and I’m unequivocally convinced that he’s the better candidate — the others, including Bonds, aren’t even close.
“It’s time for our youth — talented youth with creative ideas like Marcus — to take their place as members of our city’s leaders, especially if those whom they’re seeking to replace, have been less than productive,” she said.
