When former D.C. first lady Cora Masters Barry announced her decision to endorse Marcus Goodwin, 28, a native Washingtonian, Ward 4 homeowner and real estate professional, for the at-large D.C. Council seat currently held by Anita Bonds, she says she could not foresee the backlash sheโ€™d receive.

Nonetheless, Barry says sheโ€™s convinced that Goodwin will make a great council member because โ€œhe knows the city, heโ€™s particularly dedicated to the south side of the District and especially because itโ€™s time to have some excellence on the council.โ€

โ€œSome people have incorrectly assumed that [Bonds] had a long-term relationship with my late husband [Marion Barry] but that was never the case,โ€ Barry said.

Bonds, now in her 70s, was once an aide to then-Mayor Barry.

โ€œIโ€™ve been surprised by the level of tension my decision has caused, but before I made up my mind, I sat down and talked with Marcus candidly,โ€ Barry said. โ€œI got to know him and was able to ascertain what he wants to do for the District and for our residents. Heโ€™s earned my unwavering support and Iโ€™m unequivocally convinced that heโ€™s the better candidate โ€” the others, including Bonds, arenโ€™t even close.

โ€œItโ€™s time for our youth โ€” talented youth with creative ideas like Marcus โ€” to take their place as members of our cityโ€™s leaders, especially if those whom theyโ€™re seeking to replace, have been less than productive,โ€ she said.
