The D.C.-based Mamie Johnson Little League team has become the first all-Black team to win the championship in the leagueโs 31-year history.
The youth baseball team advanced to the regional tournament in Bristol, Connecticut, by defeating the Capitol Hill Little League 14-7 this week in the title game.
The team, which is only the second Black group to compete in the championship game, was created in 2015 and named after Mamie โPeanutโ Johnson, a D.C. resident who was the first female pitcher in the Negro Leagues.
