Alexandria City Public Schools will require that masks be worn inside all school facilities and vehicles this fall, regardless of a person’s vaccination status.
The school board unanimously approved the recommendation at a special meeting Tuesday night, WUSA-TV (Channel 9) reported.
In addition, students, teachers, administrators and support staff will be subject to daily online health screenings, temperature checks at school entrances, continued enhanced cleaning and procedures to limit the number of visitors in school facilities.
Families are also asked to drop off students outside of schools, WUSA reported.
The mask mandate was developed along with the Alexandria Health Department and based on guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Virginia Department of Health.
The first day of the 2021-2022 school year in Alexandria is Aug. 24, with the exception of Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School, which starts on Aug. 9.
