Prince Georgeโ€™s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks has appointed a retired D.C. Public Schools administrator to replace Alvin Thornton as chair of the countyโ€™s board of education.

Juanita Miller, a former state delegate in the Maryland General Assembly, has also provided leadership for the Prince Georgeโ€™s County Affairs Committee, the Womenโ€™s Caucus Legislative Committee and the Black Caucusโ€™ Business Roundtable Conference, according to a statement from Alsobrooksโ€™ office.

โ€œIt is truly a distinct honor that the county executive has requested me to serve in this position,โ€ Miller said in the statement. โ€œI thank her for the confidence she has in my leadership skills and community service. โ€ฆ Iโ€™d also like to acknowledge and thank Dr. Thornton who has done a great job in leading the Board during his most recent tenure.โ€

Prior to her retirement from DCPS, Miller served as a liaison for the school system interfacing with various government and private agencies, the statement said.

Alsobrooks also appointed board member Sonya Williams as its vice chair. Williams, first appointed to the board in 2014 by then-County Executive Rushern Baker, was sworn in for her second elected term representing District 9 in December 2018.
