Americans are uncomfortable with the reopening of the country amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and fear that doing so will worsen the nation’s recovery efforts, a CBS News poll found.

By about two to one, Americans worry the reopening will make the outbreak worse, rather than have no effect, CBS reported. More than six in 10 Americans said the reopening over the next few months will help the economy turn around. However, three Americans to one say the recovery will be slow.

Minority communities will likely suffer more than others from the virus, poll respondents said. Fifty-seven percent said Blacks will be affected “a lot” by the coronavirus, compared to 52% for Hispanics and 28% for whites.

The poll also found that 63% of respondents said the country’s top priority should be for people to stay at home to slow the spread of the virus, while 37% said getting back to work and fueling the economy is paramount.
