Ben’s Chili Bowl will temporarily shutter its landmark U Street NW location at midnight July 14 for the first major repairs to the historic building in more than 60 years.
The closure is expected to last four months, with a grand reopening planned for November. The updates will focus on preserving the integrity and heritage of the beloved space while ensuring it remains a welcoming and safe gathering place for future generations.
The business will continue operations as a pop-up at 1208 U Street NW, across the street from the original site, starting at 11 a.m. July 17. Ben’s products are also available at its other stores throughout the Washington metropolitan area and at Giant and Costco groceries.
Ben’s Chili Bowl has been a cornerstone of the District since 1958, where locals, celebrities, politicians and generations of families have come together over food, music and conversation.
“Ben’s has always been about more than just food. It’s also about family, community and history,” said Virginia Ali, co-founder of the company. “We’ve welcomed generations of guests through our doors, and now we’re taking this time to care for the space that has meant so much to so many. It’s time to give it some love, so it can serve another generation.”
Customers are encouraged to visit the U Street location by July 14 to take a photo with Virginia “Mom” Ali and share their favorite Ben’s Chili Bowl story — whether it’s a late-night meal after a concert, a first date, a family tradition passed down through decades or friends sharing a fun moment.
Guests are encouraged to post photos and memories on social media using the hashtag #MyBensStory or send photos or videos to vida@benschilibowl.com. Selected stories and images will be featured on Ben’s Chili Bowl social media platforms throughout the repair period as a tribute to the people who’ve made Ben’s what it is.
