Bernie Sanders has suspended his bid for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, setting up a November showdown between Joe Biden and President Donald Trump.
The Vermont senator, who also ran unsuccessfully for the nomination in 2016, made the announcement Wednesday morning during a conference call with staffers.
Sanders at one point had surged to the head of a bloated field of Democratic contenders as presumed favorite Biden floundered.
But the former vice president’s fortunes turned remarkably in late February with a win in the South Carolina primary — a victory fueled by strong support from Black voters.
Biden rode that momentum into Super Tuesday, building a virtually insurmountable lead as the Sanders campaign stalled and the coronavirus pandemic put the race on the back burner.
