Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has taken a definitive lead in the race for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, surging nine points for a double-digit lead over his closest rival, billionaire Michael Bloomberg, according to new polling data.

The latest survey published Tuesday from NPR, PBS and Marist shows Sanders with support from 31 percent of Democratic voters nationwide, while the former New York City mayor has garnered second place at 19 percent.

The polls, conducted in December, allowed Bloomberg to qualify for the Democratic debate in Las Vegas on Wednesday, marking the first time the wealthy businessman will appear with the other presidential hopefuls.
