Shirikiana Gerima at Sankofa Video, Books & Café in Washington, D.C., featured in Best of The DMV 2025.
Shirikiana Gerima, co-founder of Sankofa Video, Books & Café in Washington, D.C., stands at the heart of a space dedicated to Black storytelling, culture and community.

We stopped by Sankofa Video, Books & Café — a D.C. landmark with a story as rich as its community ties.

Sankofa didn’t start as a bookstore or café, but as a film production company focused on creating space for authentic Black stories and voices. Over time, that creative mission grew into something even bigger: a bookstore, café and community hub where culture, conversation and connection thrive side by side.

Today, Sankofa is more than a business. It’s a neighborhood gathering place where people come for books, coffee, dialogue and a shared sense of purpose. It remains grounded in its original vision: to amplify stories, foster connection and ensure every voice is heard.
