The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture will honor Black women activists throughout March with exhibits, workshops and culinary events.

The museum’s Women’s History Month programming centers on “Black Women: The Activist,” showcasing stories of women who fought for justice and equality.

Preservation workshops will teach participants quilt-making techniques. An heirloom quilts workshop runs March 13-14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for $50, while a three-day crazy quilts workshop will be held March 19-21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for $150. Online registration is required.

On March 22, a free Community Day event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. will feature activities inspired by women including Mary McLeod Bethune, founder of the National Council of Negro Women. The museum’s “Explore More!” Gallery will display flower-inspired art connected to Bethune and Sybrina Fulton, while the Sweet Home Café will sell sweet potato pie inspired by Bethune’s fundraising efforts for her school for Black girls, now Bethune-Cookman University. Registration is required.

A virtual embroidery workshop honoring activist Angela Davis will be held March 23 from 1-3 p.m. The $20 session includes supplies mailed in advance. Workshop leader Nichole Sorhaindo, founder of The Other Cat blog, will guide participants of all skill levels.

The Sweet Home Café will host chef’s tables on March 8, 15, 22, 28 and 29 from noon to 3 p.m., featuring award-winning chefs preparing dishes reflecting their heritage. Ethiopian cuisine by cook Kassech Menkir will be featured March 1-6.
