Whether a person develops a severe form of the coronavirus may depend on their blood type, according to a genetic analysis study.

The scientists who conducted the study compared the genes of thousands of European patients, finding that those who had Type A blood had a stronger likelihood of developing severe disease than those with Type O, according to report published Wednesday by the New England Journal of Medicine.

The study compared roughly 2,000 patients with severe COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus, to several thousand other people who were healthy or who had mild or no symptoms, The Associated Press reported.
