Condoleezza Rice, who served as secretary of state under President George W. Bush, will be one of the featured speakers at the Republican National Convention in Tampa.
It will be the most prominent role of any African-American figure at the convention.
The Republicans have been criticized by Democrats for favoring policies that restrict abortion as well as the ability of women to make their own health decisions.
Among the other prominent women speakers at the convention will be Nikki Haley, the governor of South Carolina, as well as Gov. Susana Martinez of New Mexico.
