Coronavirus cases increased by more than one million throughout the world in the past five days and the growth continues to accelerate from week to week.

Reported cases increased by 1,042,200 from July 6 through July 10, an uptick from a 994,400 increase from July 5 through July 9, CNN reported, citing a Johns Hopkins University tracker.

The overall number of global cases passed 13 million Monday, growing by 1,061,600, according to the Johns Hopkins data. More than a half-million coronavirus-related deaths have been reported since the pandemic began.

In the U.S. alone, nearly 3.4 million cases have been reported as of Tuesday, including roughly 136,000 deaths.

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhannon Ghebreyesus said returning to the “old normal” won’t happen anytime soon.

“We need to reach a sustainable situation where we do have adequate control of this virus without shutting down our lives entirely, or lurching from lockdown to lockdown,” Tedros told reporters Monday at a media briefing in Geneva.
