The coronavirus pandemic in Africa is almost at “full speed,” the director of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday.
The director, John Nkengasong, called for more face masks and testing throughout the continent, saying “this battle will be won or lost at the community level,” The Associated Press reported.
South Africa leads the continent with 224,000 confirmed cases and for the first time the Gauteng province that encompasses the country’s largest city and administrative capital, Johannesburg and Pretoria respectively, has the most cases with 75,000 or 33 percent, AP reported.
These developments are taking place as the confirmed cases in Africa eclipsed the half-million mark with 522,000, with 12,000 deaths.
