COVID-19 Policies at D.C. Universities

District universities and colleges are set to begin in-person instruction during the week of Aug. 23 and while the institutions mandate that students, faculty and staff wear masks indoors and practice social distancing, there are a few variances.

All of the institutions allow religious and medical exemptions.

Below is a listing of the District’s accredited higher education institutions and their policies regarding the coronavirus according to their websites.

*AMERICAN UNIVERSITY-Classes start on Aug. 30. Students, faculty and staff must be fully vaccinated before the start of classes. While masks must be worn indoors, they don’t have to be outdoors.

*CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY-Classes begin on Aug. 30. On campus, everyone must wear a mask indoors regardless of vaccination status. If alone in their office, classroom or lab, individuals can be mask less. All personnel should report their vaccination status as soon as possible.

*GALLAUDET UNIVERSITY-Classes begin on Aug. 30. All members of the Gallaudet University community are required to be vaccinated. Wearing masks outdoors—optional.

*GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY-Classes begin on Aug. 25. All individuals must be vaccinated upon arrival on campus. Masks must be worn indoors and outdoors while on campus grounds. Individuals who aren’t vaccinated will be tested regularly until they can produce a proof of vaccination form. If a university employee tests positive for the coronavirus, they will be provided an alternative work site or they must take unpaid leave or use paid leave to get vaccinated. Telework and online students don’t need to be vaccinated.

*GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY-Classes begin on Aug. 30. Students, faculty and staff are to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Masks don’t have to be worn outdoors. Community testing for the virus can be obtained on campus.

*HOWARD UNIVERSITY-Classes are set to begin on Aug.23. Students, faculty and staff must be vaccinated for the fall semester. If students aren’t vaccinated when classes began, the first does must have been taken by Sept. 3 by the two-shot Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna vaccines or the single-shot Johnson & Johnson. The last dose for the two-shot vaccines must have been administered by Oct. 1. New university hires must have been vaccinated prior to the first day of work.

*TRINITY WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY-Day and Weekly classes start on Aug. 30. Everyone in the university community must be vaccinated.

*UNIVERSITY OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA-Classes start on Aug. 23. Students, faculty and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 for the Fall 2021 semester. Masks don’t have to be worn outdoors on campus. Six feet social distancing has been mandated throughout the campus.
