Thirty-one Virginia prison inmates infected with the coronavirus have died since the outset of the pandemic, state statistics show.
The 925-inmate Deerfield Correction Center in Southampton County had the highest toll in the state, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported, citing figures from the Virginia Department of Corrections. The Deerfield facility houses many geriatric and chronically ill prisoners.
The state reported that 17 inmates in Deerfield have died, with the facility having 285 active cases, according to the Times-Dispatch.
Deerfield’s infections account for more than half the 474 known active cases in the state prison system, statistics show. Another outbreak took place at the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women, with 115 cases, the Times-Dispatch reported.
As of Tuesday, Virginia has approximately 148,000 COVID-19 cases and 3,200 deaths, according to a state health department tracker.
