Cyntoia Brown, who was sentenced to life for killing a man when she was 16, has been freed from prison after serving 15 years.
Earlier this year, former Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam commuted Brown’s sentence for the 2004 murder of a Nashville real estate agent.
Brown, now 31, walked away from prison in Tennessee on Wednesday, having also secured a book deal. She had been convicted for murdering a man she said paid her $150 to have sex with him, and that she feared for her life during their encounter, leading her to shoot him.
Brown, whose story led celebrities such as Rihanna, Alyssa Milano and Kim Kardashian West to advocate on her behalf, is cited as an example of the need for criminal justice reform.
“Free Cyntoia,” which Brown worked on while in prison, will be published Oct. 15, Atria Books announced Tuesday.
