Cardinal Donald Wuerl resigned Friday morning from his position as archbishop of Washington, D.C., over his handling of priests accused of sexual abuse.
The 75-year-old Wuerl’s resignation comes on the heels of a recently released report from a Pennsylvania grand jury on sexual abuse and “predator priests.” All totaled, 99 priests from Pittsburgh were named in the 900-page report, which graphically describes instances where children were being raped, molested and beaten.
From 1988 to 2006, Wuerl presided over 32 accused priests, some of whom he has been accused of reassigning and reinstating.
A statement released from the Vatican said, in part:
“The Holy Father Francis accepted the renunciation of the pastoral government of the archdiocese of Washington (U.S.), presented by the Most Important Card. Donald W. Wuerl.”
