In anticipation of Friday’s historic House vote on D.C. statehood, Mayor Muriel Bowser has commissioned #muralsDC51, a project to create 51 murals across all eight of the District’s wards based on the themes of statehood, Black history and social justice.
The first mural project began Friday at 201 Bryant Street NW.
The project is part of the Department of Public Works’ Murals DC program. The murals will be created by local artists.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to post pictures of these and other murals online along with the hashtag #muralsDC51.
H.R. 51, the statehood legislation up for a vote on the House floor Friday, has more than enough cosponsors to pass, meaning it will likely be the first time that D.C. statehood is approved by a chamber of Congress.
