The Bowser administration announced late last month it has awarded the contract for a new development on the site of the old Fletcher-Johnson Middle School in Southeast, which has been vacant since 2011.

D.C.-based Gragg Cardona Partners was selected to build 816 mixed housing units and retail spaces, including a food market, on the 15-acre site at 4650 Benning Road, Bisnow reported.

Fletcher-Johnson Middle School closed in 2008. The building was leased to public charter schools and used as a temporary site for Woodson High School during its renovation, but has been closed since 2011.

“This campus has sat vacant for nearly a decade and we are proud to finally move forward on delivering the housing and amenities that the residents of Ward 7 asked for,” Bowser said in a statement, Bisnow reported.
