D.C. Council member Kenyan R. McDuffie (I-At-Large) has introduced legislation that would formally designate the city as the official sports capital of the United States.ย

The Official Sports Capital of the United States Designation Act of 2025 recognizes the District as a premier destination for sports events, teams, and activities. The bill also directs the Washington Convention and Sports Authority (Events DC) to implement a strategic plan to further elevate the city’s presence in the sports industry and expand community engagement.

McDuffie highlighted the Districtโ€™s legacy as a leader in the sports landscape, home to major professional teams, historic venues, and internationally recognized sporting events.

โ€œThis designation solidifies our status and unlocks new opportunities to expand our economic and cultural impact through sports,โ€ McDuffie said.

Under the bill, Events DC would be responsible for attracting and retaining major sporting events, conferences, and tournaments to drive tourism and economic development. The initiative also aims to increase investment in youth sports and community athletic programs, fostering inclusivity and future generations of athletes.

Additionally, the plan calls for developing partnerships with professional, collegiate, and amateur teams while launching marketing and branding efforts to highlight D.C. as the nationโ€™s top sports hub.

The legislation highlights the Districtโ€™s continued investment in sports infrastructure, including Capital One Arena, Nationals Park, Audi Field, the RFK Memorial Stadium Campus, and CareFirst Arena.

The bill will now move through the legislative process, with stakeholders working to secure its passage.
