D.C. Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb has begun prosecuting drivers with excessive speeding violations on District roads, drawing praise Tuesday from Council member Charles Allen.

One Maryland driver has accumulated 300 speeding tickets in just two years, officials said.

The crackdown stems from the STEER Act, authored by Allen, D-Ward 6. Provisions granting the attorney general authority to pursue these cases took effect Oct. 1.

“Spread the word: If you drive dangerously, D.C. Attorney General Schwalb and his team will take you to court, no matter where you live,” Allen said.

The attorney general’s office is “enforcing the STEER Act aggressively” to make streets safer by targeting drivers who speed, run red lights and ignore stop signs, according to Allen.

“These traffic scofflaws are driving through our neighborhoods without regard for human life,” he said. “They need to slow down before they kill someone.”

Allen said he plans to seek funding in the upcoming budget for additional STEER Act provisions, including a priority boot-and-tow point system, to strengthen enforcement against dangerous drivers.
