As President-elect Donald Trump prepares to return to the White House, Democratic governors and attorneys general across the country are mounting a robust defense of progressive policies that may face challenges under the incoming administration.
Officials in states such as California, New York, Illinois and Massachusetts are leading efforts to safeguard their residentsโ rights, protect progressive state laws, and prepare for a new wave of potential federal mandates affecting immigration, reproductive rights, and civil liberties.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom has called a special legislative session to ensure the stateโs laws are resilient against federal policy shifts. Newsom, a longtime Trump critic, emphasized that California would take decisive action to protect its climate initiatives, immigration policies, and reproductive rights.ย
โThe freedoms we hold dear in California are under attack โ and we wonโt sit idle,โ Newsom said. The governor and his allies noted that the call for a session signals Californiaโs commitment to maintaining its progressive stance, even if federal policies threaten those efforts.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the Empire State Freedom Initiative in New York, a coordinated strategy to shield New Yorkers from anticipated federal encroachments on rights and regulations. Hochulโs initiative will mobilize state and local agencies to address areas of potential federal overreach, focusing on reproductive health, civil rights, and gun safety.ย
โThe safety and well-being of New Yorkers are my top priorities,โ she stated, pronouncing her readiness to protect residentsโ fundamental freedoms.
Attorney General Letitia James also outlined plans for legal responses to defend New Yorkโs stance on issues that may be at odds with federal directives.
โAs attorney general, I will always stand up to protect New Yorkers and fight for our rights and values. We stood up for the rule of law once, and we are ready to fight back again,โ James said.
Gov. JB Pritzker delivered a strong message in Illinois, addressing residents with a firm commitment to shield his state from federal interference. Pritzker cautioned that if anyone attempted to infringe upon Illinois residentsโ freedoms, they would have to confront him first.ย
โTo anyone who intends to come take away the freedom, opportunity, and dignity of Illinoisans: You come for my people, you come through me,โ Pritzker declared.
He also expressed optimism for Illinoisโ future, regardless of federal shifts. โA happy warrior is still a warrior,” he exclaimed.
Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey spoke of the responsibility of states to uphold democratic principles, emphasizing that they can employ regulatory authority, regulations, and legislation to protect citizensโ rights and autonomy.ย
โEvery tool in the toolbox has got to be used to protect our citizens, to protect our residents, and protect our states,โ she said.
The coordinated response by blue-state leaders comes as Trumpโs team, led by senior adviser Jason Miller, outlines an aggressive plan to reverse policies enacted by President Joe Biden. Miller confirmed that Trumpโs top priority on Day One would be to reinstate his previous border policies, potentially creating an immediate point of contention with states like California and New York, which have enacted immigration protections.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, who oversees the nationโs capital, was more cautious. Bowser affirmed the Districtโs support for a smooth transition and collaboration with the new administration. However, she has previously highlighted the challenges of Trumpโs proposed โfederal takeoverโ of the city and criticisms of its autonomy.
โWe will pursue a collaborative approach to our federal priorities in the District,โ Bowser said, balancing her commitment to home rule with a willingness to work with the federal government.
Across the nation, Democratic governors in 14 states hold executive and legislative power, positioning them as crucial strongholds against any federal actions threatening their policies.
With newly passed state constitutional protections for reproductive rights in New York, California, and other blue states, the message from these leaders is clear: they are prepared to confront federal challenges head-on, using every available resource to safeguard the freedoms and values within their jurisdictions.
โWe did not expect this result, but we are prepared to respond to it,โ James said. โWe faced this challenge before, and we used the rule of law to fight back.โ
