Dimensions Healthcare System’s board of directors unanimously approved an agreement last week to have the nonprofit company become an affiliate of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS).

The agreement is the latest step in UMMS taking sole ownership of a $543 million Prince George’s Medical Center in Largo. The system’s board will now review documentation during the summer.

If approved, officials plan to hold a groundbreaking ceremony in the fall. The 11-story hospital, which will include cancer and trauma centers, behavioral health services and a neonatal intensive care unit, is on track to open in three years.

The hospital would service residents in Prince George’s County and three other counties in southern Maryland. It will replace the more than 70-year-old Prince George’s Hospital Center in Cheverly, which Dimensions owns and plans to keep but hasn’t determined a specific use.
