Yoga Fest is a popular event.

When people think about the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), they usually picture children at summer camp, teens playing basketball, or families enjoying a day at the pool. Well, more than one thing can be true, and I want District residents to hear loud and clear:

Recreation is for adults, too.

At the DPR, weโ€™re creating curated experiences that remind adults they deserve time to play, recharge, connect, and invest in themselves. Recreation doesnโ€™t end when you graduate from school, and it certainly doesnโ€™t stop when you become a parent, start a career, or settle into adulthood.

Life moves fast. Between work, family responsibilities, errands, and everything else that fills our calendars, many adults donโ€™t make time for themselves. We convince ourselves that fun has to wait until vacation or that wellness comes with an expensive gym membership or boutique fitness studio.

But it doesnโ€™t have to.

One of DPRโ€™s greatest strengths is that we offer affordableโ€”and often freeโ€”opportunities for adults to stay active, learn something new, meet people, and enjoy everything our city has to offer.

Many people know us for serving our senior community, and weโ€™re incredibly proud of that. Every day, our recreation centers are filled with our beloved โ€œSeenagersโ€ participating in fitness classes, social activities, educational programs, and community gatherings that keep them healthy and connected.

But weโ€™re more than that.

Weโ€™re also here for the working professional who needs a stress-relieving workout after a long day.

Weโ€™re here for the parent looking for an evening Zumba class while the kids are at practice.

Weโ€™re here for the neighbor who wants to learn a new recipe in one of our culinary classes.

Weโ€™re here for the resident training for their first 5K or simply looking for a walking group to stay motivated.

Weโ€™re here for the friend group searching for something different to do on a Friday night.

Thatโ€™s why weโ€™ve been intentional about expanding adult programming across the District. From gardening to a hike club, weโ€™re building opportunities that fit into the lives of todayโ€™s adults.

You donโ€™t have to spend hundreds of dollars each month to enjoy quality recreation. You can drop into one of our fitness classes and get an experience that rivals many boutique studiosโ€”without the boutique price tag. You can discover a new hobby, meet new friends, or simply carve out an hour for yourself.

Because investing in yourself shouldnโ€™t be a luxury.

One of the newest examples of this vision is Chill Vibes in the Park, our adult-focused summer series that invites residents to gather outdoors for an evening of music, games, massages, good food, and good company. Itโ€™s exactly what the name suggestsโ€”a chance to unwind, disconnect from the stress of the week, and reconnect with your community right in Ward 7 at Kenilworth Parkside.

We also have events like Jazz in the Park, Yoga Fest, Chuck Brown Day and a few surprises for our adult residents.

Sometimes recreation looks like breaking a sweat. Sometimes it looks like dancing to great music, laughing with friends, or enjoying a beautiful summer evening in one of DCโ€™s parks.

Thatโ€™s the future weโ€™re building at DPR.

So whether youโ€™re interested in fitness, wellness, arts, cooking, gardening, community events, or simply finding new ways to enjoy your city, I encourage you to explore what we have to offer.

You may come for a class.

You may stay for the community.

Either way, I hope youโ€™ll discover what weโ€™ve always believed:

Recreation isnโ€™t just for kids. Recreation is for adults, too.
