The Greater Washington Region Clean Cities Coalition has completed a five-year electric vehicle project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, the organization announced.

The Mid-Atlantic Electrification Project brought together more than 25 partners to build a regional electric vehicle infrastructure across the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.

The multimillion-dollar initiative launched an electric vehicle ride-hailing program that put 100 vehicles on the road in partnership with Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. and Lyft. The coalition conducted 100 outreach and education efforts in underserved communities and helped small businesses learn about grant opportunities.

The project provided resources, training and workforce development programs, particularly for members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. It also offered technical assistance and education to government agencies, municipalities, faith-based organizations and nonprofits, along with strategic electric vehicle planning and mapping.

“We recognize the ongoing need to enhance access to EV charging infrastructure in key underserved communities within our region,” said Antoine M. Thompson, chief executive and executive director of the coalition. “Building robust partnerships between the private and public sectors remains one of the most effective strategies for generating positive impacts in those neighborhoods and communities.”
