A long-simmering obsession with Jeffrey Epstein has erupted into open revolt within the Make America Great Again movement, as prominent conservative media figures and influencers turn their ire toward President Donald Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi over what many see as a profound betrayal.
For years, Trump promised to release troves of documents exposing Epsteinโs network of powerful associates. During campaign rallies and in social media posts, he stoked speculation that Epsteinโs death in 2019 was part of a vast conspiracy to protect elites. Earlier this year, Bondi made a spectacle at the White House, brandishing binders that she said contained explosive information about Epsteinโs connections.
But last week, the Justice Department and FBI released a joint memo that directly contradicted those conspiracy theories, stating there was no evidence of a secret โclient listโ of prominent men involved in sex trafficking. The memo further concluded that Epstein died by suicide, not murder โ undercutting Trumpโs own claims and years of promises to supporters.ย
The Daily Mail reported that some of the most prominent pro-Trump voices are now accusing the administration of a cover-up.
According to The New York Times, infighting within the administration exploded into public view during a tense July 9 meeting where FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino were pressed about whether the Bureau had been blocked by the Justice Department from releasing more information.
After the confrontation, Bongino skipped work July 11 and told associates he was considering resigning, Politico reported.
Trump, asked whether Bongino remained in his post, responded, โI think so,โ but added that โheโs in good shapeโ after speaking with him.
Patel, who has previously fueled Epstein conspiracies, posted on social media Saturday, July 12, acknowledging, โThe conspiracy theories just arenโt true, never have been.โ
Bondi, whose repeated promises of disclosures became rallying cries for the movement, is now facing fierce backlash. At the Turning Point USA Student Action Summit in Tampa, Fox News host Laura Ingraham polled the crowd on whether they were satisfied with the investigationโs outcome. She was met with overwhelming boos.
Conservative commentator Megyn Kelly said at the summit, โYou either believe that Pam Bondi was telling the truth then, or that sheโs telling the truth now, but both cannot be true.โ
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, a Florida Republican, threatened Bondiโs job, declaring, โPam, if you canโt do your job, weโll find someone who will.โ
Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon described Epstein as โthe key that picks the lock on so many thingsโnot just individuals, but also institutions,โ The Daily Mail noted.
Mike Cernovich, who received one of Bondiโs much-hyped binders in February labeled โThe Epstein Files: Phase 1,โ wrote on X, โNo one is buying it. No one is dropping it.โ
Trump Blames Democrats, Some Conservatives Still Pushing for Answers
Trump has defended Bondi, posting a show of support on Truth Social and inviting her to watch the FIFA Club World Cup final from his box in New Jersey over the weekend. The president also attempted to redirect blame toward Democrats and the intelligence community.
โThey created the Epstein Files, just like they created the FAKE Hillary Clinton/Christopher Steele Dossier,โ he posted, adding, โWhy didnโt these Radical Left Lunatics release the Epstein Files? If there was ANYTHING in there that could have hurt the MAGA Movement, why didnโt they use it?โ
Still, many in Trumpโs base remained unconvinced.
According to NBC News, โInfowarsโ host Alex Jones demanded Trump โrelease everything,โ warning that โitโs only blowing up [10] times bigger.โ Right-wing podcaster Matt Walsh called Epstein โa symbol of how the corrupt and powerful are never held accountable.โ
Tucker Carlson, regarded as a MAGA standard-bearer, also joined the critics. Speaking at the Turning Point summit, Carlson said the Justice Department had shown โcontemptโ for Americans by releasing a report that effectively told them to โshut up conspiracy theorist.โ In an interview with NBC News, Carlson accused Bondi of making โludicrous claimsโ she could not back up.
The New York Times reported that Trump is increasingly being targeted by the same conspiracy-fueled culture he once leveraged to propel himself to power. Trumpโs earlier remarks praising Epstein have also resurfaced. In 2002, he told New York Magazine, โIโve known Jeff for 15 years. Terrific guy. Heโs a lot of fun to be with.โ
Trump later distanced himself, saying he banned Epstein from Mar-a-Lago.
The controversy deepened when The Daily Mail reported that Ghislaine Maxwell, Epsteinโs longtime associate now serving a 20-year prison sentence for sex trafficking, was willing to testify before Congress.
A source told the outlet, โNo one from the government has ever asked her to share what she knows. She would welcome the chance to tell the American public the truth.โ
Maxwell claims she should have been shielded by Epsteinโs 2007 non-prosecution agreement. Meanwhile, critics have highlighted inconsistencies in the governmentโs narrative. Video footage released from the Metropolitan Correctional Center was presented as proof Epstein hanged himself, but key portions are missing, and the cell door is never visible.
The backlash reveals that Trumpโs most ardent loyalists are questioning whether he will deliver on the narratives he once embraced. As New York Times columnist David French observed, โThe Epstein story mattered so much in MAGA circles because it was a key element in their indictment of Americaโs so-called ruling class.โ
