Fairfax County Public Schools has mandated that its high school athletes now must be vaccinated against the coronavirus.
The mandate, announced Monday by the school system, goes into effect Nov. 8 and applies to winter and spring sports, as well as dance and step teams, WTTG-TV (Channel 5) reported.
Fairfax County Schools Athletic Director Bill Curran told WTTG that the start date allows students the chance to get vaccinated in time for the winter sports season.
The school system will make some exceptions to the policy for religious or health reasons, WTTG reported.
As of Tuesday, the Fairfax Health District, which includes the county and the cities of Fairfax and Falls Church, has fully vaccinated roughly 60% of all residents, according to an online county dashboard.
