Dr. Anthony Fauci says he favors coronavirus vaccine mandates for schoolchildren as the highly contagious delta variant fuels case surges throughout the country.
“I believe that mandating vaccines for children to appear in school is a good idea,” the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “We’ve done this for decades and decades, requiring polio, measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis.”
No vaccine has currently been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for children under 12, but Fauci told ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos earlier this month that enough data should be available by early October for the FDA to consider whether that age group can safely get vaccinated.
Fauci said the Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna vaccines could be cleared by the FDA for children younger than 12 before the holiday season, Reuters reported.
