The Food and Drug Administration has given its approval for an inexpensive, faster saliva-based coronavirus test.

The FDA gave emergency-use authorization for the test, SalivaDirect, which was developed by researchers at Yale University.

The test is currently used by the NBA to check asymptomatic players and staff and has received partial funding from the league and the NBA Players Association, AL.com reported. Labs are expected to charge about $10 per test, with a turnaround time for results of about three hours.

Researchers said the test is less invasive than the more common nasopharyngeal swab.

The test could be available to the general public in a few weeks, AL.com reported.
