More than one million dead Americans were sent $1.4 billion in coronavirus stimulus payments, according to a General Accountability Office audit Thursday.

The stimulus payments, part of the $2 trillion CARES Act passed in March by Congress to help struggling Americans amid the coronavirus pandemic, were to go out “as rapidly as possible,” but the IRS and Treasury Department sent out the first three rounds of checks using procedures that didn’t include using Social Security Administration death records to filter out decedents.

More than 160 million payments totaling $269 billion have been made, though many have complained of delays and obstacles in receiving the checks, if they arrived at all.

Nevertheless, President Trump has recently hinted at sending out another round of payments, which he said would be “very generous.”
