The Federal Emergency Management Agency has funds for families to help pay funeral costs for deaths related to the coronavirus pandemic.
The program, which formally begins early next month, will allow applications for financial assistance with upcoming funerals as well as reimbursement for past services.
“At FEMA, our mission is to help people before, during and after disasters,” said acting FEMA Administrator Bob Fenton. “The COVID-19 pandemic has caused immense grief for so many people. Although we cannot change what has happened, we affirm our commitment to help with funeral and burial expenses that many families did not anticipate.”
FEMA will compensate up to $9,000 for funeral expenses per deceased individual but their survivors must have a death certificate that says the cause of death was the coronavirus or related to the virus.
