A new guide aims to help transportation leaders ensure no communities are left behind as they transition fleets to electric vehicles.
The Greater Washington Region Clean Cities Coalition (GWRCCC) released a comprehensive guide designed to assist transportation leaders in the equitable transition of their fleets to electric vehicles (EVs).
“This fleet equity guide will help make sure that no person or community is left behind as organizations, companies and governments deploy electric vehicles,” said Antoine M. Thompson, CEO and executive director of GWRCCC.
Developed in collaboration with industry experts, government officials and clean energy advocates, the guide addresses key challenges that all communities face as public and private organizations across the country seek to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality.
The publication serves as a roadmap for fleet managers and staff, outlining critical steps for electrification, including vehicle procurement strategies, charging station deployment and workforce training programs. It also highlights success stories from jurisdictions that have successfully transitioned to EV fleets, offering valuable insights and replicable models.
“The GWRCCC’s Leading with Equity in Fleet EV Deployment guide outlines many strategies for fleets to maximize the benefits of their clean transportation deployments,” said Kae Tuitt, program manager of zero-emission truck deployment. “What is especially useful is the guidance on workforce development and the establishment of community trust, which is essential for bottom-up buy-in. While some electrification targets may be set by leadership, this guide provides steps to empower those directly involved in the work. This helps them feel more comfortable with job security, and being included in the transition process can go a long way.”
