If acclaimed actress Halle Berry could have one dream come true, it would be to play revolutionary activist Angela Davis.
The Academy Award winner recently expressed her desire to play the former Black Panther supporter during a keynote conversation Friday with Essence Editor-in-Chief Vanessa De Luca at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans.
“There’s one woman that I’d really like to play before I die,” Berry said onstage before the music festival crowd. “I’d really love to play Angela Davis.”
Berry has longed to portray the 73-year-old scholar and outspoken activist, having expressed interest in the role as far back as six years ago.
“I’ll probably never get to play it in my life and I am going to be sad until the day I die, but I really want to play Angela Davis badly,” she reportedly told Jet in 2011. “So badly. I just think she’s fascinating and I think I would love to tell a story from her perspective about that time in our history and what it was all about with the Black Panthers.”
Berry has praised Davis for consistently speaking out against oppression and fighting for justice.
