D.C. is among eight localities in the region set to receive roughly $53 million in federal funding to help eradicate homelessness.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Monday that $23.6 million has been earmarked for D.C. to renew support to 39 housing and service programs for homeless people.

Overall, the metropolitan region will receive $52.5 million through HUD’s Continuum of Care program, which provides funding to local programs and projects assisting individuals and families experiencing homelessness, the department said.

“As the District continues to deal with this health crisis, this funding will significantly bolster the ongoing efforts of our Continuum of Care partners,” said Jane Miller, HUD Mid-Atlantic deputy regional administrator. “At HUD, we are grateful for all they do to support and protect those experiencing homelessness, especially during this difficult time.”

Other D.C.-area jurisdictions receiving grants include:

Montgomery County, Md.: $9,313,574
Prince George’s County, Md.: $6,318,617
