Nur Omar Mohamed, father of Rep. Ilhan Omar, died from complications of the coronavirus, the lawmaker announced Monday.
“No words can describe what he meant to me and all who knew him,” the Minnesota Democrat, one of a group of far-left first-year congresswomen known as “The Squad,” said in a statement.
Two of Omar’s congressional colleagues have also lost loved ones to the coronavirus: Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) lost her older sister in May and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) lost an older brother in April.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the United States reported more than 2.1 million confirmed coronavirus cases, including nearly 117,000 deaths, according to a Johns Hopkins University tracker.
