Jamie Foxx continues his healing trek by bringing the audience along with him in his new comedy special filmed at the Fox Theater in Oakland, California. In “Take Care of Yourself,” which began airing on Hulu Oct. 7, the multi-talented storyteller brings his spot-on impersonations, comical family chats, cultural observances, and sly glances that ask the question, “Do you feel me?”

Foxx is back with responses to fellow comics Katt Williams, Cedric the Entertainer and others about “What Had Happened Was…,” his 2024 Netflix stand-up special, following a stroke in April 2023. He can take a joke, but his lines also make him seem a little cautious.

“They said my last special wasn’t funny,” Foxx says, “especially all of the comedians.”

Family Lands Best Jokes

Family is at the heart of “Take Care of Yourself,” such as the comedian’s father, who has been living with him for 20 years.

Through the years, he’s tried to get his dad to stop eating so much fried food, try gluten-free, and eat more vegetables. So while Foxx was healing from his stroke, his dad couldn’t wait to dig in.

“See, you could have been eating bacon the whole time,” Foxx says his dad told him. “ Get you some fried chicken and some hog maw.”

However, his father isn’t the only family member mentioned.

He tells the audience a story about when he decided to go out to a “young” club and got a rude awakening before leaving the house. When he put on a mock turtleneck, his sister cracked a joke.

“You look older than old,” she said.

While he replied, “Oh no, I look presentable,” the age issue became clear when he pulled up to the club, driving up in his older Rolls-Royce, right next to newer sports cars. He strolled in, feeling slightly unsure because he was still managing some health issues and an NBA player who admires him stepped in to help.

Foxx jokes around, but his reality checks and the love of his family keep him humble.

Toward the end of the special,  Foxx sits at a piano as his daughter, Anelise Bishop, plays her two guitars. Their joy in playing together was a great way for Foxx to wrap up with laughs, sprinkled with some serious talk for the audience.

“[Jamie Foxx], I loved your stand-up special! I have watched you since ‘In Living Color,’ throughout your amazing  TV, movie, and music career, and on ‘[Beat] Shazam’ with your daughter! You are such an amazing talent to watch!!! Thank you,” social media user Baily wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, in a message to the actor. “I love how much you support your kids!!!”
