NEW YORK (USA Today) — Coincidence of timing? Only days before a certain high-profile smart timepiece begins shipping, Google is announcing a major software upgrade for Android Wear watches that it must hope will steal some of the attention away from the Apple Watch.
For starters, the refreshed software is designed to expand the capabilities of using Android Wear watches when you’ve left your phone behind, maybe in the gym locker while you’re working out. Android Wear watches, like the Apple Watch and most other smartwatches out there, lean heavily on having a companion smartphone nearby. (The Apple Watch requires an iPhone 5 or later.)
