Kamala Harris has reportedly decided to run for president.
The freshman senator, who previously said sheโd ponder the decision over the holidays, is expected to formally announce her bid for the Democratic nomination on or around Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a CBS Radio News affiliate in California reported.
Harris, 54, on a brief tour to promote her new book, โThe Truths We Hold: An American Journey,โ has been coy about whether sheโll run, but several sources with knowledge of her plans told the CBS that she will soon go public with her decision, likely during a campaign rally in Oakland.
Harris has remained as outspoken as any about President Donald Trump and his policies. As the president pushes his agenda to build a wall on Americaโs southern border, Harris called it a โvanity projectโ and scoffed at Trumpโs contention of a border crisis.
โItโs an emergency of his own creation,โ she said, noting that hundreds of thousands of federal workers remained furloughed or without pay during the shutdown.
During the Congressional Black Caucus Foundationโs Annual Legislative Conference in September, Harris said that America faced a โcritical timeโ under Trumpโs presidency and that the American dream sought by King was still deferred.
โItโs about where we came from and where weโve got to go โฆ this is a pivotal moment,โ she said. โI think we all know when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. talked about the dream, it wasnโt about being asleep. It was about being awake.โ
