Mary J. Blige has been nominated for two Oscars for her turn in the Netflix film โMudboundโ and a song on the soundtrack, and the renowned R&B singer said she could hardly contain her emotions upon receiving the news Tuesday when the nominations were announced.
โMudboundโ details the lives of two families in the Jim Crow South. Blige plays Florence Jackson, a sharecropperโs wife who becomes an unlikely friend and ally to the landownerโs wife, played by Carey Mulligan.
Blige, 47, was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category, as well as Best Original Song for โRiver Bound,โ her contribution to the filmโs soundtrack. She is first person ever nominated for an acting performance and an original song in the same year.
โThis is a new one, the actress nominee, and this is beautiful,โ the singer said in a statement. โThis is really special. So is the song because itโs something that I love to do. I love to sing. And thatโs something Iโve been doing for a very long time thatโs special to me, and the Oscars have recognized it. So, itโs all special.โ
