Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan has issued an order to allow some inmates to be released early under certain conditions to help slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, similar to what he did in April.
Hogan’s order will consider an inmate’s age and length of their remaining sentence, eligibility for mandatory supervision and home detention, medical condition, pregnancy and other special needs, WTOP reported.
Inmates who are at least 60 years old and have a good incarceration record, an approved home plan and have not convicted of a violent crime may also be eligible for early parole, WTOP reported.
Those selected will be evaluated for coronavirus symptoms and self-quarantine for at least 14 days before release, the order said.
Convicted sex offenders aren’t eligible under Hogan’s order.
The state Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services reported that 1,199 inmates have tested positive for the virus and 13 have died from virus-related illness as of Nov. 16.
